Poems On Film – Filmed Dramatisations of The World's Most Interesting and Most Challenging Poetry

Analysis classic poetry for meaning has always been a challenge. Our aim is to help the reader connect with the text, to align with the thoughts of the literature. We approach our creative from the perspective of the writer, writing in their time, and ask why they wrote the piece and what frame of mind was the author in at the time of writing.

We utilise as many gratis resources that we can get our hands on. Our shoestring approach has delivered really effective results. Our partners at Limelight Entertainment have been invaluable in assisting us get the concept of Poems on Film off the ground. We also have the full-time use of our bespoke studio in south Co. Kildare.

Direction / Creation

Our director in residence is Shane McGrath. Shane McGrath is the founder of the Limelight Entertainment group and founder and frontman with well-known Irish band Harlequin. Harlequin are a successful live outfit and have played in Windsor Castle, The Kremlin, The White House and the Chinese State Palace. Shane has fronted the band at over 3500 mid-level events to audiences from 100 to 10,000 people. A keen interest in modern literature has delivered Shane a lifetime honorary membership of the Poetry Foundation specialising in Keats and Shelley. Shane is an honorary lifetime member of the Gerard Manley Hopkins International Society. In 1996 Shane was directed by Harold Pinter and understudied Stephen Rae in Ashes to Ashes at the Ambassadors Theatre, London.

In 2012 Shane received the best performance award at the Gerard Manley Hopkins International Festival for his role in the Wreck of the Deutschland and in 2013 received another award for his recitation of the Windhover.

The Wreck of the Deutschland

In 2021 PoemsOnFilm.com aims to complete and release a dramatisation of Gerard Manley Hopklins' epic poem, The Wreck of the Deutschland. This piece was chosen for a number of reasons. The piece is known as one of the most difficult poems in the English language. Several spoken word artists have attempted audio performances, not least, Cecil Day Lewis, but for the most part, these 'readers' didn't truly understand the text. Secondly, Hopkins has a strong connection to Ireland, having spent large amounts of time in monasterevin and at Clongowes Wood College in Co. Kildare. Thirdly, in the mid 1990's, famed modern Irish artist, James McKenna, directed a dramatisation of the Wreck of the Deutschland. IN 2012, the Hopkins society resurrected McKenna's vision for arts week, which included a performance of the play at IMMA. We like the natural connectivity of this reasoning and are prepped to cast, create and film the production armed with an acute understanding of the poem itself.
